Masdar City is a six sq km sustainable development in Abu Dhabi, currently under construction. Developed by the Masdar Initiative, it claims that, ‘when completed, it will become the world’s first zero carbon, zero waste development while maintaining the highest quality of living.’[1] It uses traditional Arabic planning principals, together with existing and future technologies, that will redefine the design and construction of cities in the future. It is an ambitious and realistic project attracting the highest levels of international expertise, creating a mixed-use, low-rise, high-density sustainable city. The development is significant as a test-bed of an unprecedented scale for developing upon the idea of the sustainable city. Masdar is a renewable energy hub modal, which if successful, will become a paragon for future cities across the globe.
